A fashion e-commerce brand in Lagos gets 150 customer messages a day. Most are the same five questions: Where is my order? Do you have this in size 12? Can I return it? How long does delivery to Port Harcourt take? Is this item back in stock? Two staff members spend most of their day copying answers, checking order records and updating the CRM. After 6 p.m., messages pile up until the next morning, and some of those customers buy somewhere else.
None of this work needs a person's judgement, but all of it needs someone to read, look things up and act. That is exactly what an AI agent is built for.
This guide explains what Zia Agent Studio is, how it works, what it costs, and how Nigerian businesses can use it to build AI agents that do real work inside Zoho.
Zia Agent Studio is Zoho's builder for AI agents. An AI agent is different from a chatbot. A chatbot answers questions. An agent can also take action: look up a record, update a deal, create a task, draft and send a reply, or hand work to another agent.
Zia Agent Studio is part of Zia Agents, Zoho's agentic AI platform, which has three parts:
Agents work across Zoho's ecosystem of more than 60 apps, including Zoho CRM, Zoho Desk, Zoho Books and Zoho Projects, and can also connect to external cloud applications.
Type what you want the agent to do, for example "respond to support tickets about delivery status using our order records", and Zia sets up the agent's configuration for you. You can then review and adjust it. You don't need to write code.
If you prefer full control, you configure each part yourself:
| Setting | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name and role | Who the agent is and what job it does | "Order Support Agent: answers delivery and returns questions" |
| Instructions | How the agent should work, step by step | "Check the order record before replying. Escalate refunds over ₦50,000 to a person." |
| Knowledge | Documents and pages the agent refers to | Returns policy, delivery zones, product catalogue |
| Tools | Actions the agent is allowed to take | Read orders, update ticket status, add a CRM note |
| Model | The AI model that powers the agent | A Zoho-hosted model, or your own OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key |
| Guardrails | Rules the agent must never break | "Never offer more than 10% discount." |
You can add documents and web pages to an agent's knowledge so its answers match how your business actually works: your policies, prices, product details and processes. An agent is only as accurate as the information you give it, so keep this knowledge up to date.
Tools let agents act, not just talk. Zoho has made hundreds of actions across its products available to agents, such as retrieving emails, updating records and adding tasks. Agents can also use Zoho's wider platform services, including custom functions and APIs, Zoho Flow and Zia Search, to reach data in other systems.
Each agent has Do's and Don'ts that set its limits, from a maximum discount to the tone of voice it uses. Guardrails also help protect against toxic or biased exchanges. Clear guardrails matter most for agents that talk to customers or change records.
Agents can work together. You can set which other agents an agent may collaborate with, and combine agents with complementary skills into one that handles cross-functional work. For example, a sales agent can hand a won deal to an onboarding agent.
The Agent Store has a growing library of ready-made agents, such as a Sales Development Representative (SDR) Agent, Email Responder, Meeting Scheduler Agent and Refund Tracker. They come with preconfigured instructions, so you can hire one, deploy it into a supported Zoho app and refine its settings afterwards. Some settings on prebuilt agents can't be changed.
You choose which model runs each agent:
Model availability depends on your Zoho data center. If a model doesn't appear when you create an agent, it probably isn't offered in your data center yet.
Agent Studio lets you monitor what your agents are doing and see usage broken down by agent and by model, so you can check their work and keep costs under control.
When it may not be the best fit: if most of your business data lives outside Zoho, a general-purpose automation or AI platform may suit you better. Tasks that need careful human judgement, such as approving large refunds, making credit decisions or handling sensitive complaints, should stay with a person, with the agent only preparing the work. And if your processes aren't written down anywhere, document them first. An agent can't follow rules nobody has defined.
AI agents can make mistakes. Review their work regularly, start with low-risk tasks, and keep a person in the loop for anything that affects money, contracts or sensitive customer issues.
Example workflow: a customer emails about a late order → a support agent reads the ticket in Zoho Desk → it checks the order status → it replies with the expected delivery date and updates the ticket → if the order is more than a week late, it escalates to a team member and adds a note in Zoho CRM.
Many Nigerian customers send enquiries in the evening and at weekends. An agent can answer routine questions immediately, so customers aren't left waiting until the next working day.
AI usage is billed in US dollars, which makes budgeting harder when the naira moves. Zia Agents' free monthly token allowance on Zoho-hosted models means many small and mid-sized businesses can run agents without paying for AI usage at all. If you do go over, the prepaid wallet caps your spending at what you have loaded.
Businesses that handle customer data should consider where it is processed, including their obligations under the Nigeria Data Protection Act. Zoho-hosted models keep data within Zoho's infrastructure. With BYOK, data is processed by the external AI vendor you connect.
For small Nigerian businesses where one person often covers sales, support and admin, an agent that handles the routine part of each role can make a real difference.
Zia Agents itself is free. Building, deploying and managing agents in Agent Studio costs nothing, and you are not charged per agent, so hiring ten agents from the Agent Store costs the same as hiring one. You pay only for the AI model usage behind your agents, and only in some cases.
| Item | Free allowance | USD after allowance | NGN after allowance (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agent Studio and Agent Store | Unlimited | $0 | ₦0 | No charge to build, deploy or hire agents |
| Zoho-hosted Standard tier (Qwen 14B, Qwen 3.5 35B MoE, GLM 4.7 Flash) | 30 million tokens a month | $1 per 1 million tokens | ₦1,333 per 1 million tokens | Good starting point for most agents |
| Zoho-hosted Pro tier (GLM 5) | 20 million tokens a month | $3 per 1 million tokens | ₦4,000 per 1 million tokens | For more complex agents. On request, US and IN data centers only |
| OpenAI models through Zoho Key System | None | Vendor's standard rates | Vendor's standard rates | Paid from your Zoho wallet from the first token, with no Zoho markup |
| Bring Your Own Key (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Cohere) | Not applicable | $0 to Zoho | ₦0 to Zoho | The AI vendor bills you directly |
Zoho prices Zia Agents in US dollars only. Naira figures are converted at the CBN official (NFEM) rate of about ₦1,333 to $1 in October 2026. What you actually pay depends on your bank's or card's exchange rate. Local taxes are charged on top.
How credits work:
What this looks like in practice:
Other costs to remember: agents work inside your existing Zoho apps, so you still need the right subscriptions for those apps, and each app's API limits still apply. Some AI features built into individual Zoho apps also depend on that app's plan.
Check the Zia Agents pricing page for current prices, or ask us to estimate costs for your use case.
When professional help is worth it: if you want an agent to act on live CRM, Desk or Books data, connect it to systems outside Zoho, coordinate several agents, or set strict guardrails around money and customer data, an implementation partner can help you design, test and deploy it safely.
Zia Agent Studio is Zoho's tool for building AI agents that can answer questions and take actions across Zoho apps, such as updating records, creating tasks and replying to customers.
Yes. Building, deploying and managing agents is free. You pay only for AI model usage beyond the free monthly allowance, which is 30 million tokens on Zoho-hosted Standard models, or for external models.
No. You can describe the agent you want in plain language and Zia will set it up, or you can configure it step by step. A clear understanding of the task is more important than technical skills.
A chatbot mainly answers questions. An AI agent can also take actions in your systems, such as updating a CRM record, creating a task or sending a reply, and can work with other agents.
Yes. You can connect your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or Cohere, and the vendor bills you directly. You can also use OpenAI models through Zoho's keys and pay from your Zoho wallet.
Yes. The Agent Store has prebuilt agents for sales, marketing, support, HR and operations, such as an SDR Agent and a Meeting Scheduler Agent. You can hire them and adjust their settings.
With Zoho-hosted models, your data stays within Zoho's infrastructure. With your own API key, data is processed by the external vendor you choose. Give agents access only to the data and actions they need.
Zia Skills perform predefined actions for specific use cases. Agent Studio lets you build fully customisable agents for more complex business workflows.
Zia Agent Studio lets businesses build AI agents that do real work inside Zoho: answering customers, following up leads, updating records and preparing reports. You can build agents by simply describing them, start from a prebuilt agent, and choose the AI model that fits your budget and data requirements.
Because the platform is free and the monthly token allowance covers most light usage, it's a low-risk way for Nigerian businesses to start with AI. Begin with one narrow, low-risk task, test it well, keep a person in the loop, and expand from there.
